Pre-Operative Evaluations

Our complementary pre-operative evaluation is one of the most complete in the industry. Each potential candidate for LASIK receives a comprehensive eye exam, including multiple automated tests, thorough refractions (the measurement of the prescription of the eye), and a complete ocular health examination. Approximately 5% of the patients we evaluate will not be good candidates for LASIK based on the results of their pre-operative tests.

Our Laser Vision Correction consultations include the following tests:

  • Wavescan CustomVue, San FranciscoSubjective and automated refractions, including Wavescan CustomVue, a new revolutionary technology that allows us to create a customized visual map of your eye.


  • Corneal Topography – an individualized contour map of the front surface of the cornea. Below are corneal topography maps of a patient, before (left) and after (right) LASIK.

  • Corneal Disease, San FranciscoBausch and Lomb’s Orbtek Orbscan – this technology creates topographical maps of the front and back surfaces of the cornea, in addition to measuring corneal thicknesses at all points of the cornea. This allows us to rule out corneal diseases with much better precision, and thus insure that the patient is a good candidate for LASIK.

  • Pachymetry – the pachymetry reading is the measurement of the thickness of the cornea. We utilize two pachymetry measurements in our pre-operative evaluations: Orbscan (as illustrated above) and Konan non-contact optical pachymetry, as seen below.

  • Pupilometry – We use the Colvard Pupilometer, an instrument that uses infrared light to measure the pupil size in extreme dark conditions. Pupil size is an important factor in determining a patient’s risk of night time difficulties after LASIK.

  • Slit lamp examination – our doctors will thoroughly examine the cornea and other structures of the eye to rule out any diseases that would be contraindicated in LASIK.

  • Retinal examination – a thorough dilated examination will be performed to rule out eye diseases, such as glaucoma or retinal detachments.

  • Optical Coherence Tomography – this latest advancement in ophthalmic technology provides extremely high resolution imaging of ocular structures, allowing our doctors to more precisely evaluate the cornea, optic nerve, and retina to rule out underlying diseases.
